From Kindergarten Teachers to Child Psychotherapists: An Account of the Development of Child Psychotherapy at Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital 1930s to 1970s (2015)

unapi

The 1930s to the 1970s saw a significant transition in the practice of child psychotherapy, which saw its origins move from the child guidance centres to professional specialisation. While this shift has been examined in relation to the development of various theoretical approaches, it is less often discussed within the context of public hospital clinical settings where child guidance clinics operated. This article considers how hospital-based child guidance clinics staffed by kindergarten teachers evolved into child psychotherapy clinics staffed by trained psychotherapists. It considers how staff of the Royal Children's Hospital (RCH) in Melbourne, Australia, contributed to this process and examines the factors that facilitated the growth of child psychotherapy as a profession.
