Auteur Marc Hameleers, verbonden aan het Stadsarchief, schreef dit nieuwe eerste deel van "Kaarten van Amsterdam" met de overzichtskaarten van Amsterdam die in de jaren 1538-1865 vervaardigd werden. Deel 2 verscheen al eerder in 2002 en is nu grondig herzien en aangevuld.Hiermee is de complete herziening van de beroemde Catalogus van Amsterdamsche Plattegronden, in 1934 samengesteld door Antoine Everard d’Ailly, voltooid.De twee delen samen geven een fraai topografisch overzicht van de geschiedenis van de stedelijke ontwikkeling van Amsterdam door de eeuwen heen. De topografische kaarten geven een gedetailleerd beeld van het aanzien van wijken en buurten en van de ligging en vorm van straten en pleinen. Daarnaast zijn er ruim honderd thematische kaarten opgenomen die een schat aan informatie bevatten over alle mogelijke onderwerpen zoals demografie, openbaar vervoer, toeristische attracties, verspreiding van besmettelijke ziekten, bevolkingsdichtheid, religie, handel en nijverheid.Door de veelheid van informatie wordt een beeld gecreëerd van wat mensen raakte en bezig hield in vroeger eeuwen. De beide delen zullen in de komende tientallen jaren een van de belangrijkste bronnen vormen voor de bestudering van de geschiedenis van Amsterdam, in het bijzonder voor het historisch-topografisch onderzoek.
