[Abstract translated by DeepL Translator: This is the abstract in English… The Brihat Samhita or "Great Collect," a handbook of astrology from ancient India, was composed by Varahamihira, one of the greatest astronomer-astrologers of his time. Into the work flowed, along with the author's own studies, the traditional knowledge attributed to the sages of the past sorted and arranged in 106 chapters and 2790 stanzas, so divided so that it could be consulted by astrologers and studied by those about to become astrologers, like a veritable manual for daily use. The Manual, although known to Indologists since the second half of the 19th century but virtually unknown to the Italian reader, is offered in this version edited by Annamaria Dallaporta and Lucio Marcato in the wake of other treatises and manuals considered indispensable for knowledge of ancient India. In the West, despite the post-Enlightenment mistrust reserved for astrology, many first-rate scholars since the late 19th century have investigated the nature, structure, and layering of meanings of ancient astrology, which they regarded as humanity's essential attempt to work out a relationship with the Cosmos. While this book is a veritable handbook of astrology for understanding the often obscure daily vicissitudes that befall all men, it is also an open "window" into the court life of the India of the Gupta Empire.]
