The history of collections, the research on the provenance, the analysis of stylistic features and the reconstruction of historical manufacturing techniques provide important information on map materials preserved in libraries, archives, and museums. The current technical visualization possibilities of historical map holdings and the information networking allow an online and therefore unrestricted access to historical map materials. The use of digital tools for the analysis of the Re-Construction and Re-Structuring of the world, which is especially visible in the map holdings of the 18th and 19th centuries, is, however, in many respects, only at its beginning. Presented are four of these projects in Germany, which from different perspectives deal with the topic of visualization and virtually classify and make available historical map holdings.
