Da Galileo a Kircher: percorsi della scienza gesuitica (2005)

unapi

This essay traces back, with respect to the relations with Galileo, the involvement in the field of science of the Society of Jesus, constricted between absolute loyalty to Aristotle and his physics and the revolution in the heavens and on earth, inaugurated by the "Sidereus Nuncius". A battle that the Society fought on two fronts, the internal one - aimed at seeing that none of its members would be involved in this revolution -, and the other, aimed at contrasting at all costs the success of the new science. The essay seeks to document how this twofold effort led to a deadlock that was to end up isolating the science exercised by Jesuits on backward positions, or seeing them privilege the spectacular aspects of the new experimental science, but without sharing its foundations, as it happened in the work performed by Athanasius Kircher.
