Questo volume è dedicato alla vicenda umana e professionale di Gabriele Monasterio, direttore della Clinica medica dell’Università di Pisa dal 1955 al 1972. I numerosi interessi scientifici, il determinante contributo fornito allo sviluppo della medicina ed in particolare della nefrologia e della medicina nucleare sintetizzano la statura scientifica di Monasterio, capace di creare una vera scuola, che vedrà interpreti di prima grandezza. Autore di oltre 220 pubblicazioni, Monasterio ha saputo interpretare con lungimiranza le rivoluzioni scientifiche del ’900, determinate dall’ingresso delle indagini chimiche e fisiche nell’ambito della medicina: l’armonizzazione tra sensibilità clinica e risultati di laboratorio sarà un tratto distintivo dell’operato di Monasterio, a cui si devono la nascita della Divisione nefrologica dell’Università di Pisa e dell’Istituto di Fisiologia clinica del CNR.
