Acqua e sacralità in rupe: evidenze pittoriche dalle chiese di Altamura e Gravina in Puglia (2020)
One of the most interesting aspects of the rupestrian sacred tradition, namely local worship, in the Gargano area, of St. Michael, associating the cave with the presence of pools in the rock, formed by drops of water believed to have thaumaturgical properties, offers a twin level of interpretation: the widespread diffusion of the consecration to the Archangel of a large number of rupestrian churches in the Murge area (S. Michele, S. Angelo in Fornello, S. Angelo di Curtaniello, in Altamura, and S. Michele a Gravina, in Puglia), and the existence of depictions of the Archangel inside caves. By means of the case studies presented here, the aim is to try to highlight the more or less direct relationship with the sanctuary of Monte S. Angelo. While in the Gargano context (Monte S. Angelo and Cagnano Varano) the angelic presence was manifested, in line with devotional tradition, by means of tangible signs (footprints, and impressions left by wings, respectively), whereas there are no traces of medieval painted depictions inside caves (and, paradoxically, there are very few even in sub divo churches), at Gravina and Altamura, in addition to the existence of rock-pools (the water sometimes drawn from Monte S. Angelo itself), there are numerous fresco depictions of St. Michael. For that matter, for the Monte S. Angelo site, an early medieval source (Apparitio) expressly underlines the absence of scupltures. However, the pictures seem to offer a further form of worship, and seem almost to act as surrogates for the angelic presence that is not otherwise perceptible.
