Ein vergessener Technikphilosoph. Julius Goldstein und die Darmstädter Modernediskurse um 1900 (2017)
The article first presents the concept of modernity developed by the author elsewhere, in which cultural thresholds are of particular importance. They occur when traditional orientational patterns are no longer accepted after major change. Technology, which played a decisive role, came under pressure around 1900. For this reason, in a second step, the German technological discourse of that time is briefly sketched. Against the backdrop of spectacular dynamics in technology, a stark contrast characteristically prevailed between cultural despair especially on the part of the educated, and legitimation efforts on the part of engineers. The main section is about this discourse at the Technische Hochschule Darmstadt, which can be reconstructed partly on the basis of inaugural speeches by the vice chancellors (professors of mechanical engineering), and partly in the writings of Julius Goldstein, lecturer and later professor of philosophy at the General Department. The works of this almost completely forgotten author contain the full repertoire of interdisciplinary technical discussions of today, with remarkably current insights. At the same time, his work offers an analysis of current times which resolutely opposes the triumphalism of modernity without succumbing to fin-de-siècle resignation. More qualitative contemporary reflections about the relationship between technology and modern culture can hardly be found in Germany, as a final look at Max Weber may reveal, who dealt with this subject in a completely different manner. Der Beitrag stellt zunächst das vom Verfasser andernorts ausgearbeitete Mo- derne-Konzept vor, bei dem Sattelzeiten oder Kulturschwellen eine besondere Bedeutung einnehmen. Sie treten ein, wenn hergebrachte Ordnungsmuster nicht mehr anerkannt werden. Diese Spannung wird um 1900 aktuell, wobei der Technik eine entscheidende Rolle zukommt. Deshalb wird in einem zweiten Schritt der deutsche Technikdiskurs um diese Zeit knapp skizziert, der vor dem Hintergrund spektakulärer Dynamiken durch eine scharfe Entgegensetzung grundsätzlich kulturkritischer Einstellung vor allem von Seiten der Gebilde- ten und Legitimationsbemühungen durch Ingenieure gekennzeichnet war. Im Hauptteil geht es um diesen Diskurs an der TH Darmstadt, rekonstruierbar einesteils anhand der Rektoratsreden, andernteils mittels der Schriften Julius Goldsteins, Privatdozent und später Professor für Philosophie an der Allge- meinen Abteilung. Bei diesem so gut wie vollständig vergessenen Autor ist bereits das ganze Repertoire heutiger interdisziplinärer Technikdiskussionen mit entsprechend bemerkenswert aktuellen Einsichten zu finden. Er bietet zugleich eine Zeitdiagnostik, die sich entschieden gegen den Triumphalismus der Moderne richtet, ohne in die Resignation des Fin de Siècle zu verfallen. Reflektiertere Überlegungen zum Verhältnis von Technik und moderner Kultur gab es im damaligen Deutschland wohl kaum, wie ein abschließender Blick auf Max Weber ergibt, der mit diesem Thema so ganz anders umging.
