Pastoureau, Michel (Author)
The medieval bestiaries are talkative on the life expectancy of animals. Beasts and birds which live on the longest are the stag, the deer, the crow and the raven. We also find in the bestiaries, in the encyclopedies and in the veterinary’s treatises some recipes for prolonging the life of horses, dogs and, mainly, hawks and falcons. Among the main mentionned ingredients: milk, figgy bread, hot mulled wine, walnuts, apples, honey, valerian and St John’s wort.
