Tout au long de sa vie scientifique, Albert Einstein réfléchit aux conséquences philosophiques de ses propres travaux sur le temps. Dès 1918, il opère un lien entre la théorie de la relativité et la conception de l’univers-bloc, d’après laquelle tous les moments du temps coexistent. Par la suite, il clarifie ce lien en expliquant que la conception de l’univers-bloc est l’interprétation la plus commode et la plus objective de la théorie. Einstein développe aussi l’idée que, du fait de son engagement déterministe, la physique dans son ensemble permet de soutenir l’univers-bloc. Avec divers interlocuteurs, il discute certaines objections contre cette conception.
