Weiternutzen, Recyceln, Entsorgen.

Abstract This article deals with the different forms of handling scrap tires in the Federal Republic of Germany and Austria since the 1960s. With the emergence of the automobile society in the 1950s, the demand for and use of tires rose steadily. As a consequence, the quantity of scrap tires has increased, with various dis- posal problems emerging at the same time. This paper investigates different methods of disposal and recycling of scrap tires, which ranged from attempts to extend operating life to material recycling and disposal by the waste in- dustry. Despite these multiple possibilities, tire disposal alone has prevailed since the 1980s. The handling of scrap tires is also placed within the context of household waste disposal to depict disposal “trends”.
