A Comparison of the 1513 Maps of Eastern Indonesia by Francisco Rodrigues and those of the 1519 Atlas Miller (2020)

unapi

The Spice Islands first appeared on a world map in the charts of the Atlas Miller of 1519. Comparison is made between the maps of the Indonesian archipelago and the Spice Islands made by the Portuguese navigator Francisco Rodrigues in 1513, and the maps made by the Portuguese cartographers Lopo Homem, Pedro Reinel and Jorge Reinel that were included in the Atlas Miller. It is possible that the Planisphere in the Atlas Miller was intended to dissuade the proposed voyage to the Spice Islands by Ferdinand Magellan. However it is clear that the Portuguese tried to confuse their Spanish rivals by mislocating the valuable nutmeg-producing Banda islands and clove-producing islands of Ternate and Tidore on the Insulindia map of the Atlas Miller.
