ABSTRACT Geometrical optics provided the first rigorous mathematical description of light. However, in the late seventeenth century, phenomena that went beyond its limits began to be studied. Huygens’ Traité de la lumière deserves an eminent place among the attempts to define a more complex and deeper image of light.
