Ironmaking commenced in Vermont during the period of the Revolutionary War and ended about a century later. During that period, dozens of blastfurnaces, bloomery forges, and foundries made or worked iron in all of the state's 14 counties. As part of a statewide survey of industrial archeology sites pertaining to Vermont's iron, charcoal, and lime industries, 36 potential blast furnace sites were identified. This article describes the 12 sites where substantial surface remains were found.
