Prior to the appearance of the primitive streak, an embryo may divide and form identical twins. For this reason, some people think that at this stage a morally significant individual comes into being. We argue that the current 14-day research limit for growing human embryos in the lab should be extended, because the formation of the primitive streak is an important moment in the development of the embryo, but it is not a moment that justifies a different moral treatment of the embryo.
