Giovanni Maria Lancisi, a Cartesian and materialisty physician, emerged unscathed from an inquisitorial trial in 1690 and was one of the most authoritative scientists of the time, who also served as personal physician to the Pope. In 1714, Lancisi inaugurated his library and opened it to the public. The Lancisiana, as it is known, is a precious collection of books on the history of medicine and the history of philosophy. The library has been inaccessible to scholars for several years due to serious structural damages, to the detriment of its founder's wishes and the common good.
