In the second half of the 18th century, naturalists made a great inven¬tory of nature and overseas peoples. Species were collected and brief descrip¬tions written during the journeys, analyses and classifications depended on resources available in Natural History museums. As most travelers were natural philosophers, they were not content with mere description, but also wanted to discover the laws of nature. They studied species, minerals, and the possible domestication of plants and animals. In Portugal, philosophical journeys covered long distances to advance knowledge and consolidate the ties between Lisbon and Portugal’s overseas territories. Under the command of Domenico Vandelli, the Portuguese phil¬osophical journeys initially intended to explore only Brazil, but from 1783 onwards expanded in different expeditions to the Amazon region (Brazil), Cape Verde, Angola, Goa, and Mozambique.
