Infectious Personalities: The Public Health Legacy of Three Australian Doctors in Papua New Guinea (2015)

unapi

The new imperial histories approach is becoming increasingly popular amongst historians and yet has rarely been applied to Australia's colonialism in Papua New Guinea. This article uses this approach to come to new understandings of the development of Australian public health and medical research in the second half of the twentieth century. It does this by exploring the lives of three Australian doctors who journeyed to Papua New Guinea and returned to Australia to become eminent medical researchers, asking how their experience overseas shaped their later work in Australian public health and research. In doing so, this article ‘colonialises’ both their Papua New Guinea experiences and their contributions to the development of Australian public health.
