Optische und radiografische Analysen zum St. Galler Globus (1576) – Neue Erkenntnisse zu seiner Datierung und Urheberschaft (2017)

unapi

Optical and radiographic analyses of the frame supporting the St Gallen globe have led to the identification of three historical personalities in the overpainted or retouched portraits. These are related to the Mecklenburg court at the end of the 16th century. An unfinished painting of instruments and the new attribution of the globe to globe maker Tilemann Stella allows a more precise dating of this globe of the heavens and the earth. Made in two stages, it is now preserved at the Swiss National Museum in Zurich. In all probability, it was completed in 1576 with the exception of a few decorative details and the dedication to John Albert I, Duke of Mecklenburg. Between 1585 and 1592, Duke John VII had three parchment medallions added to the frame. The preview for the sale of the globe was created between 1592 and 1595 after the death of John VII.
