Musical Knowledge in the History of Atalanta fugiens (2015)

unapi

Atalanta Jugiens is a book written by Michael Maier and published in 1617. Maier was the court physician to Emperor Rudolf II in Prague (1552-1612) from 1608 to 1611, to then develop intensive activity in England until 1616. Atalanta Ju/giens, an alchemical emblem book, contains 50 engravings, being that Maier appended a fugue on three voices to each of them. Although many scholars analyzed the musical structure of the fugues and attempted at interpreting it within an alchemical context, not much is known about how and why Maier chose and composed fugues for this work only. Physicians and alchemists were not necessarily musically educated, and the process of envisioning and accomplishing such a work is certainly more complex than what a musical-alchemical investigation can reveal. Therefore, I sought to identify the musical tradition to which Maier had resort, as well as the elements that might have contributed to the creation of Atalanta Jugiens.
