Dalla sua redazione fino ai nostri giorni, l'opera versificata di Nicandro di Colofone (poeta greco di età ellenistica) sugli animali velenosi e le sostanze tossiche ha affascinato e allo stesso tempo sconcertato gli studiosi. In tanti hanno tentato di decriptare i due poemi per svelarne i messaggi impliciti, coperti da uno spesso velo di erudizione mitologica, storica e geografica nel più puro gusto alessandrino, con i suoi giochi di rimandi ed immagini speculari che riecheggiano le rapsodie omeriche e risuonano di melodie profondamente radicate nella memoria e nell'anima greca. Livia Radici, in questo volume, ha dedicato un'indagine circostanziata e filologicamente accorta a quella che è stata la fortuna e il perdurare nel tempo dei testi dei due poemi (Rimedi contro i veleni animali e Antidoti) di Nicandro, con tutto quello che egli rappresenta nella storia della cultura ellenistica. La ricerca su tanto materiale erudito desunto dalle edizioni, traduzioni e commenti composti nel Rinascimento non resta infatti un giacimento inerte, ma sta a dimostrare la vitalità di questo scrittore che ha scelto di cimentarsi in raffinati esametri sui veleni e i loro antidoti del mondo animale e contribuisce ad una migliore valutazione della complessità e dell'importanza di due testi che, in aggiunta al loro valore scientifico e letterario, sono stati tenuti in conto presso le corti rinascimentali al fine di servire alla conservazione nel tempo degli alimenti stoccati. Il lavoro pone quindi l'analisi di queste opere su più solide basi perché ci consente una loro valutazione complessiva, dagli scoli antichi fino ai nostri giorni.
