Psichiatria e condizione umana: Il contributo di Silvano Arieti (2018)

unapi

The paper intends to provide a preliminary overview of the reflections on human nature found in the work of the renowned Italian psychiatrist Silvano Arieti (1914-1981), who migrated to the United States in 1939 to escape Fascist racial laws. In particular, on the basis of Arieti’s well-known research on schizophrenia (1955), which he conceived as a gateway to study the contradictions and polarities that determine human identity, the article retraces several relevant issues of a philosophical and scientific inquiry. These issues were also articulated in his subsequent writings (The Intrapsychic Self, 1967, and The Will To Be Human, 1972), in which psychiatry emerges as a natural vantage point to study phenomena and processes related not only to mental illness but also to more general and structural features of the “core of man.”
