The number of Galen translations from the pen of Pietro d'Abano is rather small. In most cases, the works to be translated had aroused the personal interest of the translator and were not undertaken as part of a wider programme aimed at providing Latin versions of Galen’s works directly from the Greek. It seems that Pietro’s versions were not a great success as set books for university curricula, as is also evidenced by the usually quite restricted circulation of these translations in manuscript form; and Pietro, as a translator from the Greek, was more of an amateur than a professional. A case in point is his translation of "De atra bile" ("De colera nigra"), transmitted by just two manuscripts in the Biblioteca Malatestiana at Cesena; and one of these (S. xxvi. 4) even happens to have been copied directly from the other (S. v. 4). Nevertheless, a philological examination based not just on these two manuscripts but also on two early printed editions published by Bonardus (1490) and Surianus (1502), respectively, reveals that some other manuscripts must have been in circulation and transmitted Pietro’s "De colera nigra" as well. Quite often, both editors have readings that do not derive from those two manuscripts in the Biblioteca Malatestiana just mentioned and are preferable and therefore must be adopted. This shows that Latin sources apparently no longer extant must have been drawn on by Bonardus and Surianus.
