Kepler’s Personal Astrology: Two Letters to Michael Maestlin (2015)

unapi

This essay explores a small portion of a personal astrological correspondence between Johannes Kepler and Michael Maestlin. It deals with a series of letters between the two on the births of their two sons, born ten days apart. Kepler and Maestlin discuss the boys' nativities, their hopes and expectations for their newborn sons, and the astrological interpretations to be drawn from the birthcharts. While Kepler's astronomical works have been frequently discussed by scholars, his astrological texts have received much less attention. With the Kepler Commission's recent publication (2009) of Kepler's astrological charts with additional theoretical and practical treatises on astrology and its practice, it is possible to examine Kepler's work in astrology in greater depth. These letters between Kepler and Maestlin illustrate Kepler's personal connection to astrology and his use of it for his own family.
