Die Strahlenforschung hat das 20. Jahrhundert geprägt. Strahlen kamen in Wissenschaft, Medizin, Industrie und Rüstung zur Anwendung. Was waren die Entstehungsbedingungen und wer die Akteure dieser Schlüsseltechnologie? Welche Rolle spielte dabei die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), eine der einflussreichsten deutschen Wissenschaftsorganisationen? Unabhängig vom politischen System förderte die DFG das Bestreben, die Naturkraft der Strahlen zu bändigen, zu steigern und nutzbar zu machen. Ob es um die Krebsbekämpfung, die UV-Bestrahlung von Stadtkindern, die Erzeugung von radioaktiven Stoffen, das nationalsozialistische Atomprogramm, den Strahlenschutz im Kalten Krieg oder die Entstehung der Molekularbiologie aus dem Kapital des Atomzeitalters ging – die Geschichte der Strahlenforschung deckt eine weitgehend unbekannte Seite der DFG auf: die Entwicklung der DFG zu einer bio- und risikopolitischen Institution.
