Ce livre propose - pour la première fois - une histoire sur la longue durée des «folies puerpérales»: les dépressions périnatales. Diagnostics aujourd'hui au centre des politiques de prévention de santé et de dispositifs biomédicaux d'accompagnement à la maternité, ils prennent au regard de l'histoire une dimension critique, relevant à quel point on a naturalisé la parentalité. À travers une analyse fine de sources d'archives (dossiers médicaux des malades) et de sources médicales cet ouvrage permet de combler enfin une lacune historiographique et offre des éléments d'analyse importants pour sortir la maternité d'une histoire positive. À partir d'une perspective de genre ce livre permettra aussi de nourrir l'histoire de la santé et sera de grande utilité non seulement pour les historiennes et historiens mais aussi pour les professionnels de la santé et les nouveaux parents.
