This special fascicle of Early Science and Medicine is devoted to the connections between seventeenth- and eighteenth-century physiology and moral philosophy, and to the question how their interaction contributed to insights derived from the then-fashionable inquiry into a ‘science of man.’ This latter enterprise is frequently discussed in relation to, or as part of, moral philosophy, but less attention has been paid to its relationship to contemporary medical, physiological and natural philosophical discourses. This issue endeavours to highlight some of those connections that make the ‘science of man’ a field of fruitful study of the manner in which insights, concepts and methods travel between moral and natural philosophy.
