In the first half of the nineteenth century, chemistry at the University of Leipzig emancipated itself from medicine, in the scope of which it had been developed by Anton Ridiger and Christian Gotthold Eschenbach. Otto Linné Erdmann was the first professor of technical chemistry at the Faculty of Philosophy since 1835, and energetically promoted this independence through sustained scientific achievements and as a scientific organization, for example with the construction of the new chemical laboratory "Fridericianum" and as a four-time rector .Erdmann corresponded with the important chemists of his time. With Justus von Liebig, whom he met for the first time in 1837 in Gießen, Erdmann, for more than 30 years, had a collegial-friendly exchange of ideas and information. Erdmann's letters to Liebig in Munich, covering the period from 1853 to 1867, are the focus This monograph. It deals with a wide range of topics, ranging from chemical, such as the discussion of atomic weight determinations, the Erdmann swimmer burette and the Erdmann gas analyzer, problems of agricultural chemistry and the detection of criminal cases, urban waste disposal to university affairs and private matters Two great chemists. Thus, a multi-faceted picture of the time is drawn, completed by letters by Justus von Liebig, Robert Bunsen and Carl Friedrich Mohr. The original letters are reproduced as facsimiles and transcribed.
