The abortive edition of John Martyn's Methodus plantarum circa Cantabrigiam nascentium (c.1729) (2020)

John Martyn's Methodus plantarum circa Cantabrigiam nascentium was printed in 1727 and was given to his friends and students, but not offered for sale. It has hitherto been thought that the 24 printed pages of a proposed second edition, the “abortive edition”, are a rare survival of an unpublished work. However, examination of 24 copies of the Methodus reveals that pages of the abortive edition are present in nine, and they must have been made available to students in the same way as the first edition. They are easily overlooked, especially in copies in which these 24 pages replace the first 20 pages of the earlier edition. The 24 pages cover mainly bryophytes, lichens and fungi, and Martyn's failure to complete the new edition has obscured his role in the investigation of these groups.
