Am dunklen Nachthimmel der vormodernen Zeit sind Kometen ausserst eindrucksvoll und erschreckend. Als gleichzeitig nach Beschreibung, Erklarung und Deutung verlangende Naturereignisse und als zeichenhafte Phanomene des Wunderbaren werden sie zwischen 1530 und 1682 zu Kondensationspunkten intensiver Kommunikationsprozesse, die ihren literarischen Ausdruck in einer Flut von Kometenflugschriften finden. Anna Jerratsch analysiert diesen Kometendiskurs: Sie zeigt, dass gerade die vermeintlich irrationalen oder ubernaturlichen Elemente des traditionellen Kometenbildes, z.B. der Theologie oder Astrologie, zu Katalysatoren eines Wissenswandels werden, indem sie umgedeutet, re-definiert und in das moderne Kometenbild integriert werden. Das zeittypische Nebeneinander von Altem und Neuem ist dabei nicht unverstandliche Ambivalenz, sondern konstitutiv. Jerratsch kommt zu dem Schluss, dass es bei den Modernisierungsprozessen des Wissens im 17. Jahrhundert nicht primar um die Durchsetzung einer rationalen Methode gegenuber aberglaubischen Irrwegen und den Geltungsanspruchen einer fehlgeleiteten Religiositat ging, sondern vielmehr um die Wandlungsfahigkeit und Anpassungsfahigkeit von Wissenssystemen.
