Particle physics emerged in the 1950s, and in the following decades slowly became dominated by the conviction, that experiments at increasingly high energies would lead to the discovery of new phenomena, allowing to formulate theoretical predictions for even higher energies, which would then have to be experimentally tested. Until the 1970s this research strategy led to various successes, most notably the emergence of the Standard Model. Later on, however, difficulties arose in the search of new physics, since from the 1980s onward experiments confirmed all predictions of the Standard Model. In the meantime, though, theorists had developed methods to construct scenarios of new physics at high energies even in absence of any experimental indication, creating among other things Grand Unified Theories, supersymmetry and string theory. At the start of the 21st century researchers hoped that the Large Hadron Collider would lead to new discoveries, but these expectations remained unfulfilled, and some physicists began to ask critical questions about the research strategies they had been pursuing so far. Using historical sources as well as interviews and opinion polls among high energy physicists, I will sketch the rise and possible fall of the research strategy focusing on searches at constantly higher energies.
