Guglielmo Marconi e l’Istituto di Fisica della Regia Università di Roma. (2016)

When one thinks about the relationship between Marconi and the Institute of Physics of the Royal University of Rome, one believes in general that his involvement was more than anything else an instrumental fact, managed by Orso Mario Corbino with the purpose of promoting the activity of Fermi’s group. However, if one considers overall the relations between Corbino and Marconi – the common scientific interest in the field of the electromagnetic waves; Marconi’s attraction for the area of geophysics, it too present in the Roman Institute; and the interest often shown by Marconi also in the topics regarding energy – the panorama becomes much more articulated, reinstating the historian with the trajectory of an organic relationship, activated in the beginning of the 1920s and continued until beyond the death of Corbino, a few months before the unexpected death of Marconi himself. And it restores also the image of an Institute, whose activities during the 1930s regard a broad time frame of scientific interests, of which the research in nuclear physics is certainly a “crown jewel,” but in a much more extended context.
