The Jones and Laughlin (J&L) steelworks, one of the most significant components of Pittsburgh's steel industrial heritage, has been the subject of a number of cultural resource studies over the past quarter century. Documentation, archaeological excavation, and preservation of artifacts and archival materials comprise an important body of work that provides a different way to interpret the J&L works. Today, Pittsburgh celebrates the importance of J&L through publications, exhibits, interpretive signs, and displays of industrial artifacts based on past cultural resource studies. Bikers traveling along the Great Allegheny Passage, a 335-mi. trail connecting Washington, DC, with Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, cross the former J&L property and the rehabilitated Hot Metal Bridge spanning the Monongahela River. How cultural resource studies contributed to the successful interpretation of this important steelworks and its lasting impact on the city's cultural landscape and population is the subject of this paper.
