Learned journals are essential sources for understanding the processes of communication and appropriation of knowledge by publishers, authors, men of science and readers. They disseminate knowledge, news and discoveries, memoirs and other texts to audiences eager for information and willing to access news from the learned world. In Portugal, there was great interest and curiosity about what was published in other European countries, and some publishers offered Portuguese readers news and texts from the foreign learned world. Despite its own specificities, the Portuguese editorial panorama reflects the European scene of the time and the editorial practices of other countries, reproducing, adapting and recreating published models and texts in different formats and with variable length, and integrating a growing and evolving communication network and an ever-increasing specialisation.
