During World War I, the demand for ammonium nitrate transformed many of the world's fertilizer producers into producers of high explosives. In the United States, this industrial transformation was exemplified by United States Nitrate Plant Number 2 in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. In 1994, the Historic American Engineering Record documented the technological and chemical history of the "nitrogen fixation" facility at Muscle Shoals. The result of the HAER project was the creation of a visual and textual record of what was a dynamic and rapidly changing period in industrial chemistry. This article is a summary of the work produced by the Muscle Shoals HAER team during the summer of 1994. As the conversion of fertilizers into explosives remains a volatile issue today, this work is also an assertion of the contemporary relevance of industrial archaeology.
