In the Concilium Remense, held in Reims on 18th October 1131 with the attendance of over 200 bishops in front of Pope Innocent II and Louis VI King of France, 17 canons were published stating that regular monks were not allowed to exercise the medical art anymore. This was due to the fact that, according to the Church, monks professing these activities were forgetting about their duty towards the order. Moreover, their interest in the health of the body and not of the souls might have led them to greed. The following decline of the great monastic communities in Europe led to the cultural supremacy of the first non-religious Universities, like those in Napoli and Bologna, with their new scientific resources.
