La connaissance des régions septentrionales de l’Europe à l’époque carolingienne: un changement de point de vue (2016)

unapi

During the Carolingian period, scholarly interest in the northern regions is confirmed with remarkable strength and scope. In the numerous descriptions of these spaces, clerics introduced into the chart of the orbis terrarum a north inhabited by identifiable people endowed with particular characteristics. The simultaneous development of the mission and the establishment of an empire, which extended over much of Europe, and which was eager to prove its universality, can explain this phenomenon. Carolingian geography relied on ancient information, but transformed it. By placing emphasis on Europe and the northern ocean, certain clerics modified the approach to writing geography, so that role of the Mediterranean, which had structured the representation of the inhabited world, was ceded to the encircling ocean.
