Introduction and Spread of Pumpkin and Their Influence in the Southeast Coastal Areas of China (2014)

According to Chinese local chronicles,pumpkin,with its origin in America,was first introduced to China’s southeast coastal areas in the first half of the 16 th century. Soon after,its spread became quite rapid in the southeast coastal areas of China. During the Ming Dynasty the pumpkin cultivation areas were mainly concentrated in the southeast coastal counties,and in the Qing Dynasty,pumpkin cultivation covered much of the southeast coastal areas,basically forming a pumpkin planting of the main producing areas,which became more and more prosperous in the period of the Republic of China. Motivation of pumpkin promotion consists of natural and social reasons. Effect of pumpkin promotion includes: to ease the contradiction between people and land; to increase people’s income,to obtain economic benefits; to promote the development of traditional Chinese medicine; and to enrich crop culture.
