Canadelli, Elena (Author)
The University of Padua preserves a significant collection of portraits of Italian and foreign botanists and amateurs called ‘Iconoteca dei botanici.’ The collection was assembled between the nineteenth and twentieth century by Pier Andrea Saccardo (1845-1920), director of the Botanical Garden in Padova. It consists mainly of black and white photographs in carte de visite format and photographic reproductions of portraits preserved in other institutions or taken from printed sources. A few drawings, engravings, watercolors, prints and paintings are also present. The Iconoteca was part of Saccardo’s editorial project of a history of botany in Italy. Photography played a primary role for Saccardo, since the reinforcement of the authorship of the Italian botanists’ community relied on the representation and display of their portraits.
