Il contagio epidemico ricopre uno spazio cospicuo nella storiografia del Mediterraneo, mentre il contagio metaforico, il contagio delle idee, occupa al contrario uno spazio senza dubbio più angusto. Si tratta di una lacuna grave, tanto più perché il contesto mediterraneo è sempre stato un network privilegiato di relazioni, spostamenti, migrazioni e contaminazioni. Questa ricerca finalmente indaga, a tutto campo, quali prospettive apra, quali tensioni crei, quali processi implichi, quali risultati apporti il contagio delle idee del contagio: in altre parole, il contagio del contagio. In un’indagine a vasto spettro spaziotemporale, dal Mediterraneo cristiano a quello islamico, dall’età medioevale all’età contemporanea, cinque lunghi viaggi attraverso le malattie epidemiche che più duramente hanno colpito l’umanità, dalla Peste Nera all’AIDS, seguono gli itinerari tracciati da quei flussi circolari di saperi teorici e pratici sul contagio, soffermandosi sugli aspri dibattiti che si sono registrati per ragioni a volte simili, a volte opposte, nell’una e nell’altra sponda, investendo profondamente le società sul piano medico, religioso, giuridico, politico, bioetico. In un continuo gioco di specchi tra le due sponde del mare, si osservano quei saperi mentre uniscono o dividono aree geografiche, culture e attori sociali, disegnando geometrie imprevedibili e facendo oscillare il pendolo dal contagionismo al miasmismo e viceversa, in armonia o in contrasto con la sponda opposta. Veniamo così a scoprire, passo passo, che quelle sponde erano, e sono ancor oggi, tutt’altro che opposte. Ne emerge un quadro di forte suggestione e di grande novità, non solo per il passato ma anche per il presente, non solo per l’Africa ma anche per l’Europa. In a broad-spectrum investigation, from the Christian to the Islamic Mediterranean, from the Middle Ages to the contemporary age, five long journeys through the epidemic diseases that have hit humanity, from the Black Plague to AIDS, follow the itineraries traced by those circular flows of theoretical and practical knowledge on contagion, dwelling on the debates that have been recorded for reasons that are sometimes similar, sometimes opposite, on both sides, deeply investing societies on the medical and religious level, legal, political, bioethical. In a continuous exchange between the two shores of the Mediterranean Sea, those knowledges are observed as they unite or divide geographic areas, cultures and social actors, drawing unpredictable geometries and making the pendulum swing from contagionism to miasmism and vice versa, in harmony or in contrast with the opposite bank.
