Sørensen, Henrik Kragh (Author)
In the following, I first describe the general metabiographical approach as a means to analyse a corpus of biographies. Based on differrent delineations of such corpora, I subsequently define two distinct approaches—termed longitudinal and transversal metabiographies—that allow for different historical analyses. The biographies that I wish to deal with are written about mathematicians, often by mathematicians, and intended for mathematicians (even if not exclusively). In order to illustrate the two metabiographical approaches, I outline how the longitudinal approach can help establish and contextually analyse the themes that appear in biographies about Niels Henrik Abel (1802–29), and how the transversal approach can shed light on the professionalization of mathematics in the United States through analyses of the biographies published in the American Mathematical Monthly around 1900.
