Come altrove nelle società rurali, anche nelle campagne venete e friulane le scadenze del lavoro contadino erano segnate dal calendario della Chiesa cattolica, e il buon esito dei raccolti veniva affidato alle benedizioni del clero e alle processioni nei campi. Ma ciò che distingue queste zone da altre è il fatto che nell’Ottocento le credenze magiche – e con esse l’ordine sociale, morale e religioso tradizionale – non erano sentite in contrasto con le innovazioni tecnologiche e le moderne pratiche agronomiche, tanto che lo stesso parroco chiamato a dare le sue benedizioni consigliava poi di combattere la malattia delle viti con lo zolfo. Fin dalla seconda metà del Settecento il parroco era il mediatore più adatto a insegnare le materie agronomiche dato che conosceva sia “il dizionario del cittadino” sia quello “del contadino”, anche perché spesso proveniva lui stesso dalla campagna. Il libro – uscito nel 1996 e ora riproposto in una seconda edizione – aiuta a capire meglio, tra le altre cose, il perdurare di equilibri sociali e di mentalità diffuse nei distretti industriali sorti in Veneto e in Friuli dopo la fine del mondo contadino.
