The first verses on creation translate the beginning of the world, the radiance of an active and all-powerful divine principle on nature and the emergence of created beings. The raw material, at the heart of this undifferentiated universe, concentrates in all its aspects the enigma of creation ex nihilo , before its deployment in a space for the life of every being, intelligible as sensitive. Our study would like to analyze the ontological status of matter through four Carolingian authors: Bède, Alcuin, Haymon d'Auxerre and Rémi d'Auxerre, in their respective use of their Augustinian heritage. While the four authors use the different generations of Augustinian exegesis, from the Manichean controversy to De Genesi ad litteram , the first two exegetes present a positive and ductile material, while the last two put more in evidence the confused nature of a dark matter.
