The Fréjus road tunnel connects Entrèves, a hamlet of Courmayeur in the Aosta Valley, with Chamonix and the Val de l'Arve, in the French Department of Haute Savoie. The tunnel was built between 1959 and 1962. The idea of a Mont Blanc tunnel dates back to the nineteenth century. However, initially this project had no luck, despite Baretti's careful geological study (1881). Sixty years after the start of works for the Mont Blanc Tunnel, this paper recalls the projects and events that have marked the history of the crossing of the Western Alps since the nineteenth century.
