The Artificial Roots of Synthetic Biology: Comparing Two Histories of Science (2016)

The developments of artificial intelligence show an oscillatory trend among different points of attraction. The history of this disciplinary field has been illustrated in a peculiar way, namely by opposing paradigms or antithetical approaches. Furthermore, such a historical perspective has had a theoretical influence, despite its reconstructions being based on all-embracing methodological and epistemological principles, such as the synthetic method. This paper attempts to evaluate the history of the science of artificial intelligence and to make a comparison with the developments of synthetic biology to find its connections with artificial intelligence and its “synthetic” aspects.
