In addition to its traditional focus on the machinery and structures of our manufacturing past, industrial archeology can provide a useful service through the interpretation of past industrial waste disposal activities. Two case studies conducted in Illinois-in southeast Chicago and Rockford -- delimit the scope of the problem and the methods used to locate abandoned dumps and to document the types of wastes left in the environment. Based on a variety of records, historical geographies of the two industrial zones were prepared; they can be used to guide groundwater monitoring efforts.
