The paper reconstructs the foundation and the development of the Collegium Ramazzini, an international academy of epidemiologists created in 1982 by the Italian Cesare Maltoni and the American Irving J. Selikoff. It was the result of a longstanding informal cooperation with the fields of occupational health and epidemiology, and since its inception the Collegium has fostered international collaboration in the fields of environmental and occupational health. In approaching the issues raised by the development of the contemporary chemical world, the Collegium developed as a network of scientists from a broad spectrum of disciplines, engaging with regulators worldwide in advocating a science-based approach to health and prevention.
