Le lezioni di teoria dei numeri di Guido Fubini (1916-1917) (2020)

unapi

Between the end of the XIX century and the early XX century, few Italian universities regularly provided courses in number theory. Guido Fubini’s lecture notes "Lezioni di Teoria dei Numeri" are thus a document of relevant historical interest. In this paper, we aim to develop an historical-critical analysis of this course, delivered in the academic year 1916-17. In particular, after providing a historical reconstruction about the context of mathematics education in Turin, as far as abstract algebra and number theory are concerned, we aim at analysing the structure and contents of "Lezioni di Teoria dei Numeri" (theory of ideals, Minkowski’s geometry of numbers, Riemann’s Z-function, Gauss’ law of quadratic reciprocity and regular polygons equations), and at identifying the sources that Fubini used to ‘build up’ his lectures.
