Geoffroy présente en 1718 à l’Académie royale des sciences une « Table des différents rapports observés entre différentes substances » chimiques. La présence dans cette table d’un mystérieux « Soufre principe » nous surprend. Alors que les rapports chimiques sont justifiés par le recours à des expériences, on se demande d’où vient cette étrange substance qui semble issue des travaux des alchimistes. En fait, Geoffroy l’a empruntée à son maître Wilhelm Homberg, et lui fait jouer un rôle essentiel dans le processus de la composition des métaux. Confronté aux travaux de Georg E. Stahl, il reconnaît finalement, en 1720, qu’il s’agit en fait du phlogistique. Il jette ainsi un pont entre la nouvelle chimie du xviiie siècle et les doctrines alchimiques des siècles précédents.
