La carriera scientifica di Lazzaro Spallanzani fu tutta percorsa da un’inguaribile bulimia dell’occhio e della mano. Nessuna ricerca regge tuttavia il confronto con la seconda indagine sulla respirazione e nessuna fu concentrata in un tempo così breve (1795-1799), per una massa così imponente di risultati. Presupposto ne fu la passione per la nuova chimica, che infiammò gli ultimi anni di Spallanzani e lo riconciliò con lo studio della respirazione, invero già frequentato vent’anni addietro e abbandonato proprio per avversione alla chimica flogistica. Questo libro tira dunque le fila di quattro direzioni di ricerca solidamente intrecciate: il backstage, rappresentato dalle teorie respiratorie classiche; la prima ricerca di Spallanzani (prelavoisieriana e quindi “sbagliata”); le “novità francesi” e la seconda inchiesta, che d’impeto le superò, travolgendo se stessa nella narrazione impossibile di un canone (postlavoisieriano) della respirazione “in vita e in morte”.
